About HL7 Workbench
An HL7 reference and development toolkit
HL7 Workbench brings together HL7 v2 parsing, FHIR resource browsing, CDA template navigation, terminology search, and specification documentation in a single tool. Built for healthcare integration engineers, interoperability analysts, clinical informaticists, and HL7 implementers who need fast access to standards without juggling PDFs, spreadsheets, and separate apps.
Who It’s For
Integration Engineers
Parse, validate, and debug HL7 v2 messages with schema-aware tooling and real-time feedback
Interoperability Analysts
Browse specifications, trace field definitions across versions, and map v2 segments to FHIR resources
Clinical Informaticists
Search 129 clinical vocabularies, look up codes, and verify terminology bindings against standards
HL7 Implementers
Reference v2, FHIR, and CDA specifications alongside conformance profiles and implementation guides
QA & Testing Teams
Build test messages from templates, analyze batches for field patterns, and validate against custom profiles
Data Coverage
HL7 v2
14 versions (2.1–2.9), up to 194 segments, 2,800+ field definitions, message structures, and tables
FHIR R4 & R5
150+ resource types, 160+ implementation guides, value sets, code systems, concept maps, and operations
HL7 v3/CDA
RIM model, CDA R2 core schema, C-CDA templates, C-CDA on FHIR, and CDA-FHIR element mappings
Terminology

Architecture
Client-Side Parsing
HL7 messages are parsed in a dedicated Web Worker. No message data is transmitted to any server.
API-Served Schemas
Specification data is served by a Bun + Elysia API with LRU memory caching and immutable HTTP headers.
FHIR Package Loader
FHIR resources are loaded from 205 npm-style .tgz packages covering R4, R5, and 160+ implementation guides.
Offline Mode
Cache schemas locally for air-gapped environments. Parsing and schema validation work without network access.
Encrypted Storage
Messages stored in IndexedDB are encrypted with AES-256-GCM using a non-extractable Web Crypto key.
