The Tree Navigator: an expandable outline of the message. Clicking a field moves the editor cursor to match.

Off by default

The Tree Navigator is hidden until you turn it on from the panes menu in the toolbar. Once enabled it docks on the left and its layout is remembered.

The Tree Navigator renders the message as a collapsible hierarchy of segments and their fields. Click a segment header to expand or collapse it, and click any field to select it everywhere. Use it to move quickly through a long message. Field values are shown inline: the first repetition with components joined by ^, plus a ×N badge when a field repeats. To drill into individual components and subcomponents, use the Segment Grid or the Component Editor.

Header Controls

ControlWhat it does
Desc / ValuesSwitches each node between its field description and its parsed value.
Empty fieldsHides fields that have no value to shorten the tree.
Field number / pathSwitches the node labels between field numbers and HL7 paths. Available once a message is loaded.
Validation badgesShows or hides validation badges on the nodes. Available while Validate is on.
SettingsOpens the settings panel.

Clicking a field moves the editor cursor to the matching spot, and selecting a field elsewhere highlights and scrolls to it in the tree. The sync works both ways. Segment headers expand or collapse on click; with keyboard focus on a segment, Enter or Space selects the segment itself.
