The HL7 V2-to-FHIR Implementation Guide defines how HL7 v2 messages map to FHIR resources. HL7 Workbench provides a browsable interface for these mapping tables, covering segments, data types, coded values, and message-level transformations.
Mapping Coverage
Segment Maps
How v2 segments (PID, OBX, ORC, etc.) map to FHIR resources (Patient, Observation, ServiceRequest)
Data Type Maps
How v2 data types (CWE, XPN, XAD, etc.) map to FHIR data types (CodeableConcept, HumanName, Address)
Concept Maps
How v2 table values translate to FHIR code system codes (e.g., Table 0001 Sex → AdministrativeGender)
Message Maps
How v2 message events (ADT^A01, ORM^O01) map to FHIR workflow patterns and Bundle types
Using the Mapping Browser
Navigate to FHIR Mappings
Open the FHIR Mappings page from the sidebar or navigate to /fhir-mappings.
Select a Dataset
Use the dataset dropdown in the toolbar to choose Terminology, Segments, Data Types, Messages, or Tables. (In CDA/V3 mode the datasets are Vocabulary, Profiles, and ValueSets.)
Browse Individual Mappings
Each mapping shows the v2 source, FHIR target, conditions, and implementation notes from the IG.
CDA/V3 to FHIR Mappings
In addition to v2-to-FHIR mappings, the page includes a CDA/V3 view. Switch the V2 | CDA/V3 toggle in the page header, then pick the Vocabulary, Profiles, or ValueSets dataset from the toolbar dropdown:
Vocabulary Mappings
CDA vocabulary codes mapped to FHIR CodeSystems.
Profile Mappings
C-CDA document profiles mapped to FHIR profile equivalents.
Value Set Mappings
C-CDA value sets mapped to FHIR value sets.
