Definition: This field indicates the functional involvement with the activity being transmitted (e.g., Case Manager, Evaluator, Transcriber, Nurse Care Practitioner, Midwife, Physician Assistant, etc.). Refer to User-defined table 0443 - Provider role in Chapter 2C, Code Tables, for valid values. This table contains the provider role code values for admitting, attending, medical director, etc. When the ROL segment is used in conjunction with the Attending, Referring, or Admitting physician in the PV1 segment, the HL7 specified table values must be used. Additional site negotiated values are allowed.
Note: Table 0443 appears to have a similar use and similar values as User-defined Table 0286 - Provider Role, but supports a more generic concept.
